Historic Day for Indian Sports
11th October 2010 has become one of the landmarks in the history of Indian sports. Krishna Poonia brought the 52 years’ drought to an end by winning Gold Medal in Discus Throw.
She became the second Indian individual to win a gold medal in athletics in the history of Common Wealth Games.
In the ongoing Common Wealth Games at New Delhi, Poonia threw the iron-disk 61.51 meters and became the second individual to win a gold medal in the athletics after Great Milkha Singh who won the Gold Medal in the 400 meters at Cardiff Commonwealth Games in 1958.
Another history was created by winning all three medals in discus throw event. Apart from gold won by Krishna Poonia, Harwant Kaur won the Silver Medal while Seema Antil bagged the Bronze.
With Krishna Poonia’s gold, India also equalized the number of gold medals won in the Manchester Commonwealth Games in 2006.
